What We're Watching: 'Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero' Opens Atop

The anime film “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” is the leading moneymaker at the North American box office this weekend, opening with $20.1 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday. “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” is based on a Japanese comic written by Akira Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou. The film’s grosses were helped by a significant number of showings at IMAX theaters, where tickets are more expensive. The thriller “Beast,” starring Idris Elba, opened in distant second place with $11.5 million. “Bullet Train” was third with $8 million after spending its first two weeks atop the charts, Comscore reported. “Top Gun: Maverick” was fourth with $5.85 million in its 13th week in theaters in the United States and Canada. The long-awaited sequel starring Tom Cruise has grossed $683 million domestically, the sixth-highest total in movie history. “DC League of Super-Pets” was in fifth place with $5.7 million Friday through Sunday in its fourth week of release. Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “Thor: Love and Thunder” ($4 million), “Nope” ($3.55 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($3.52 million), “Where the Crawdads Sing” ($3.15 million) and “Bodies Bodies Bodies” ($2.4 million). This weekend’s overall three-day box office total is $77.1 million. The year-to-date total is up to $5.234 billion — an increase of 168.3% over 2021’s figure, according to Comscore.
