Pokémon Wikizilla, the kaiju encyclopedia

The Pokémon franchise has made references to the Godzilla franchise and other kaiju and yokai since it first began. The central concept of the franchise, in which powerful creatures are stored inside small spheres and released by their trainers to do battle, was heavily influenced by the Capsule Kaiju used by the titular hero from the Tsuburaya Productions TV series Ultraseven; the initial title for what became the first Pokémon games was even Capsule Monsters.[1]
